Post Election Thoughts 2010

Many readers have called for the HTNL thoughts on the 2010 midterm elections.  Now over a week past election night, the dust has settled a bit and I can finally compose my thoughts.  The results look something like this:

Republicans gained control of the house, taking between 60 and 62 seats, bringing their total to around 239 seats.

Republicans gained 7 Governorships to bring their total to 29 Republican Governors.

Republicans gained 6 Senate seats bringing their total to 46 Senators.

Republicans also gained many state senates and houses including in Maine and New Hampshire.

So, this is good news if you’re a conservative right?  It’s certainly good news if you’re pro-life as pro-lifers have taken back the house and maybe more importantly many state houses and senates.  Rand Paul won in Kentucky.  Roy Blunt won in Missouri.  Pelosi is out as Speaker of the House.  There is no longer a blank check for the Democrats.  The Southern Democrat is basically extinct and the ‘pro-life’ Democrats were all but wiped out.  Voters remembered their betrayal with the Obamacare cave in support of federally funded abortion.  Bart Stupak tucked tail and ran, good riddance.

This is the bad news.  Many tea party backed candidates lost; Sharron Angle, Carly Fiorina, and Meg Whitman.  Barney Frank and John Dingellberry won, as did Harry Reid in a state with 13 percent unemployment.  This was especially surprising as Reid won by 5 points and no pre-election poll had him up by more than 1.  Unions, teachers and public workers make up such a huge block and they continued to flock to progressive Democrats because their puppet-masters demanded their unquestioning allegiance.  Until these folks start to think for themselves again, instead of simply voting themselves more lollipops, government will likely not shrink.

Honestly though, it’s hard to feel anything but happy about this election if you’re a conservative.  Americans voted their feelings on the Obama administration and the Progressive House and Senate.  People want less spending and they used the ballot box to voice this mandate.  Many feel this President is anti business and are finally waking up to his ideologies as they should have before the 2008 election.  They are tired of the weak foreign policy, they hate Obamacare, they’re tired of bowing to foreign leaders, but most of all they are tired of their economy going down the tubes.  The voters see through the stimulus as a giant ponzi scheme.  And wouldn’t you know it, the stock market experienced some nice gains after Republicans mopped the floor with the progressives.

The post election aftermath was glorious here on campus.  All the libbie professors were baffled as were the disenfranchised students.  None of them really expected such broad gains by Republicans which further confirmed my theory that few of them have ever even peered out of academia into the real world.

Small town Missouri and Illinois told a different story.  Folks, real folks, were excited and knew the election would be a blood bath.  Small town Democrats were bracing for the worst as academic Socialists were clueless.

This is the beginning.  We must continue to press for pro-life lawmakers.  Luckily, the tea party shows no signs of slowing down and voters remain ever vigilant for wasteful spending and both parties will be subject to their wrath.  Voters are tired of living on a budget as the state does not, they want smaller government, and this is the first step to ensuring they have it.
